It's unclear if other aspects of Sunset's grid trip up Tesla's FSD more than other San Francisco neighborhoods. A Tesla makes an unprotected left turn on Lincoln Way, a major road in San Francisco's Sunset District. Another street that was once notoriously difficult for Tesla's FSD to work in was Lombard Street, a steep and windy road northwest of San Francisco. When asked about using the FSD feature in the Sunset, she told BI that she had "no problems" with it. News of electric car giant Tesla's progress toward rolling out its advanced driver-assistance feature in China isn't as groundbreaking as investors are treating it, according to a top tech investor. Mark Hawtin, GAM Investment Management's investment director focused on investing in disruptive growth and technology stocks, told CNBC' "Squawk Box Europe" Thursday that such expectations were misleading — not least because Tesla's Full Self Driving service doesn't offer full autonomous driving. "We should say what they're doing — everyone's talking about this full self-driving capability," Hawtin told CNBC. On Monday, shares of Tesla rose sharply, notching their best day since March 2021, after it passed a significant milestone toward the launch of FSD in China. This raised expectations that Tesla's FSD would soon be available in China.

While all new Tesla vehicles have a standard driver assistance system installed called Autopilot, the company's FSD option costs $199 per month for most customers in North America. Tesla's FSD system does not turn cars into autonomous vehicles. According to the Tesla owners' manuals, drivers must remain attentive to the road and ready to steer or brake at any time when using FSD or FSD Beta. Owners with FSD can also get access to the FSD Beta system, which allows them to test and help debug newer driver assistance features on public roads. Under pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla has implemented voluntary recalls to improve the safety of its Autopilot, FSD and FSD Beta systems in recent years.

Tesla owners are growing weary of Musk's antics and think he's damaging the brand. Despite the Twitter debacle and Musk's polarizing way of doing things, they love the Model 3. Elon Musk's politics haven't earned him any brownie points with his customers — but Tesla buyers are mostly still loyal to his cars, especially the Model 3. Bloomberg just reconducted a survey of 7,000 verified Tesla owners in 2019 about the automaker itself, the Tesla EV ownership experience, and opinions of Musk. Some Tesla owners voiced concerns about the CEO that echoed what others told Insider, including: "Dude is a clown," "Obviously he's both brilliant and a very loose cannon," "Brilliant industrialist.

Tesla 's plan to share its full self-driving capabilities with original equipment manufacturers has Wall Street analysts talking. TSLA 1D mountain Tesla shares fall after second-quarter earnings The comments from Musk came after Tesla topped second-quarter earnings expectations but showed margin weakness due to recent price cuts. Despite these near-term margin concerns , Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas highlighted the FSD commentary as his biggest takeaway from the call. He did, however, stress some logistical concerns, including whether Tesla would need "greater involvement" in full software system of its peers. "A potential licensing of FSD would represent an important change of scope in how investors measure the TAM for Tesla."

Tesla's FSD software could bring major gains to the company's revenue, Gene Munster said. If Tesla licenses out the technology and lowers the price, that could add up to $20 billion a year. Sharing Tesla's FSD technology could be a major boost, since competitors are likely to use a first-to-market technology instead of spending money to develop their own version. By the fifth year, that could likely expand to an additional $20 billion in annual revenue, he added. "While these targets are many years away, it illustrates the FSD licensing opportunity is meaningful and worth the wait,"Munster said.

Tesla must send extensive new records to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration as part of an Autopilot safety probe — or else face steep fines. The agency initiated an investigation into Autopilot safety in 2021 after it identified a string of crashes in which Tesla vehicles using Autopilot had collided with stationary first responders' vehicles and road work vehicles. Instead, Tesla vehicles require a driver behind the wheel, ready to steer or brake at any time. The company's FSD Beta consists of driver assistance features that have been tested internally but have not been fully debugged. Tesla uses its customers as software and vehicle safety testers via the FSD Beta program, rather than relying on professional safety drivers, as is the industry standard.

A Super Bowl ad showed a Tesla slamming into two child-sized mannequins and a stroller. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the ad would raise awareness a Tesla could drive itself while supervised. The 30-second ad was created by The Dawn Project, an organization that campaigns to ban what it calls "unsafe software." The Dawn Project says the ad shows tests it performed with a Tesla using the company's Full Self Driving (FSD) feature. On its website, The Dawn Project says Tesla's FSD software is "not safe for public roads."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is examining a tweet from Elon Musk regarding an update to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, a spokesperson told Insider. Tesla shares jumped almost 8% on Wednesday after hitting a 52-week low a day earlier. The rally followed an upgrade by analysts at Citi and an indication from Tesla CEO Elon Musk that South Korea is a top candidate for a new factory the company hopes to build in Asia. Some dips in Tesla shares followed massive stock sales by Musk as he liquidates in part to finance the Twitter deal. Earlier this month, Musk sold another $3.95 billion in Tesla shares, telling Twitter employees he was doing so to save the social media company. The firm still recommends buying Tesla shares and has a $330 price target.
Russell's company makes LiDAR tech, but Elon Musk has continually spoken out against the radars in the past. Russell founded Tesla self-driving rival Luminar Technologies in 2012 when he was a 17-year-old. Instead of LiDAR, Tesla relies on a suite of external cameras and other sensors for its autonomous-driving efforts. In an interview with Time, Russell said he believes Tesla will not be able to fully achieve self-driving technology until it embraces LiDAR technology. "We effectively have more major commercial wins than any other LiDAR company, and probably any other autonomous vehicle industry company," Russell said.
